Stephen Williams - working hard for Bristol West

Closure of Clerical Medical

5.50.40pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd Jun 2009

Reacting to the news from Lloyds Banking Group that its Clerical Medical is to close with up 540 jobs being transferred to its Bristol Harbourside location, Bristol West MP Stephen Williams said, "It's obviously good news that most of the existing jobs are to be safeguarded. But this does mean further commuting into the city centre from North Somerset. I've consistently supported the case for the re-opening of the rail link to Portishead. This issue is now even more pressing and I urge North Somerset Council to work with Bristol, Network Rail and First Great Western in bringing about what should be an easy to deliver sustainable transport solution to congestion on our roads."
