Bristol West MP, Stephen Williams, has tabled a Parliamentary motion calling for the Government to take extra measures to get tough on tax avoidance. Tax avoidance currently costs the UK tens of billions of pounds a year.
The motion calls on HM Treasury to introduce legislation to create a General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR), as recently recommended in a report by top tax lawyer, Graham Aaronson QC. The GAAR would go further than previous anti-avoidance legislation in outlawing business arrangements that are designed solely for the purpose of avoiding tax.
Stephen has written an article on this subject, which you can read here.
