Today the Liberal Democrats launched their Party manifesto for the general election, which sets out a comprehensive and fully-costed plan to ensure a fairer Britain.
This manifesto sets out the Liberal Democrats vision for Britain: fair policies that will bring about real change that benefits you, whoever you are (and not just a small portion of society), whether it be in relation to health care, education, the economy, the environment or transport.
The Liberal Democrats are the only Party advocating real change, a change for good, not just an illusion of change that in reality only benefits the few. At the heart of the manifesto are four key pledges to creating a fairer society:
Fair taxes - to make your money work for you
· No tax on the first £10,000 you earn - a saving of £700 for most people.
· 3.6 million low earners and pensioners freed from income tax completely.
· Paid for by closing loopholes that unfairly benefit the very rich and polluters.
Fair start - for your children to ensure equality in our education system
· Ensure children get the individual attention they need by cutting class sizes.
· Made possible by investing £2.5 billion in schools targeted to help struggling pupils.
· Give schools the freedom to make the right choices for their pupils.
Fair future - to protect jobs, stabilise the economy and invest in a green future
· Break up the banks and get them lending again to protect businesses.
· Honesty about the tough choices needed to cut the deficit.
· Green growth and jobs that last by investing in infrastructure.
Fair politics - to create an open, transparent and accountable Parliament
· Put trust back into politics by giving you the right to sack corrupt MPs.
· Restore and protect hard-won British civil liberties with a Freedom Bill.
· Overhaul Westminster completely: a fair voting system, an elected House of Lords and all politicians to pay full British taxes.
Commenting on the manifesto, Bristol West Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Stephen Williams said:
"I am proud of this manifesto, which I played a part in drafting. I am particularly proud of the sections on education. I am keen to make sure that every child has the support and opportunities to thrive. Nick Clegg and Vince Cable have set out a clear vision for how Britain can become a better place. I hope that all Bristol West residents will be impressed by our honesty about the change that needs to be made at Westminster and the clarity of our policies."
