Bristol West MP Stephen Williams has written to the Secretary of State for Local Government and Communities, John Denham, asking him to 'call-in' the planning application for Bristol International Airport. The application would normally be dealt with by the planning committee of North Somerset Council, at a stop, however, Mr Williams told Mr Denham that the application is of major significance to the whole region and should therefore be called in for a public enquiry and a determination by the Secretary of State.
Stephen Williams has consistently opposed the expansion plans of Bristol Airport for the last 3 years. Stephen says, "We know that aviation is the fastest growing contributor to greenhouse gases and if we are serious about tackling climate change then we cannot allow air travel to continue to grow at an unsustainable rate. I am my Lib Dem colleagues nationally have voted against the third runway plans for Heathrow Airport and I believe that regional airports must also have their expansion plans held back."
