Bristol West MP Stephen Williams has expressed his dismay at the threatened closure of the bookshop Borders, which has a large branch on Queens Road in Clifton. The Borders chain has been placed into administration which means that insolvency experts will manage the company's affairs until its debts are cleared. Up to 40 jobs at the Bristol Branch are under threat if the company cannot stabilise its finances.
Stephen said "I am a regular customer of Borders and will be very sad if it has to close. We have seen far too many bookshops close in Bristol in recent years, including the Clifton bookshop on Whiteladies Road and The Book Cupboard on Gloucester Road".

Prior to becoming Bristol West's MP in 2005, one of Stephen Williams' jobs was as a bookstore assistant in the Galleries branch of Waterstone's in Broadmead. "I know that the run-up to Christmas is the busiest in the book trade and it is a terrible shame for Borders staff to have this uncertainty at this time. I hope that the company administrators are able to find a way of saving the Bristol branch".
