Local Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams visited the world-renowned Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Clifton this afternoon. He toured the main training rooms at their Pembroke Road premises and the Christchurch Green TV and radio drama studios. Former students include Helen Baxendale, Samantha Bond, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeremy Irons, Pete Postelthwaite, Amanda Redman, Greta Scacchi and Patrick Stewart.
Stephen met many of the budding actors, sound technicians, costumer makers, lighting engineers and other trainees who together bring about a successful live or recorded performance. After the visit, Stephen went to the Old Vic Studio in King Street to see the premier performance of 'The Good Companions'. The novel, by J.P. Priestley had been turned into a musical dramatisation by Malcolm McKee, and directed by the Theatre School's artistic director, Sue Wilson.
Stephen said, "I was not only very impressed by the training programme provided by the Theatre School, but really enjoyed the premier of this new play. I would thoroughly recommend everyone to go and see it over the next two weeks."
"The creative and digital media sector is already incredibly strong in Bristol, and I am sure will be a major component of the city's success, well beyond the current recession. The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School makes a vital contribution, not just to Bristol, but to the British theatre, film and TV industry."
