Commenting on Tory plans for a review of the league table system, Liberal Democrat Shadow Universities Secretary, Stephen Williams said:
"League tables are nothing more than a distraction from the main issue which is that of standards in schools and what a modern A-level seeks to achieve.
"University admission tutors and employers need to be confident that the A-level curriculum is developing the skills which students need at third level and when entering the job market. However, universities must also be more open and clear about their entrance requirements.
"Of course all subjects and standards must be continuously reviewed, but to suggest that certain subjects are 'soft' or 'hard' is quite frankly an insult to the thousands of students awaiting A-level results this week.
"If students are to achieve their full potential then the Government needs to dramatically reform the whole target and league table system, and ensure that students have access to independent advice and guidance when choosing a university and course."
