Stephen Williams MP has welcomed plans to electrify the Great Western main railway line from Bristol to London. Bristol West's Lib Dem MP has long campaigned for this improvement and has raised the issue several times in Parliament. He tabled a Commons motion calling for electrification in March 2009 (EDM 979) which stated that investment in fast rail was preferable to airport expansion at Heathrow.
Stephen Williams MP said, "I welcome the Government's announcement. Electric rail will mean faster journeys in modern carriages. This will be an enhanced experience for the passenger as well as a more environmentally sustainable journey.
"As this announcement was put out the day after Parliament went into recess I will have to write to the Transport Secretary to ask some detailed questions. We need clarification on the timetable for completion of the work to Bristol Temple Meads. The announcement concentrates on improvements from London to Swindon by 2016. Also, for the greatest environmental benefit the power should be sourced from renewable energy. This is a great opportunity for a joined up energy and transport policy."
