Stephen Williams MP speaking on how Labour's Budget has impacted Bristol
On Monday April 27th your local MP and the Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, Stephen Williams, condemned the Labour government's budget in the House of Commons.
Stephen Williams MP said that despite the global nature of the recession, Gordon Brown, given his past position as Chancellor must take responsibility for ignoring the warning signs within the UK.
Stephen Williams MP argued, "We are in a national emergency that requires swift and meaningful Government action. What has been swift is the welter of announcements from the Government. The Government spin machine has been in overdrive, recycling many initiatives and promising money, some of which is deferred until well into the future."
Stephen also expressed his concern about Bristol's financial services industry, "Royal Sun Alliance announced the closure of its office in my constituency, Bristol, West, with the loss of 500 jobs. There is much uncertainty in Bristol about our financial services industry, and I hope that closure is not a warning of things to come."
He also commented on the rise in applications to university and expressed disappointment at the fact that the 15,000 extra higher education places promised last year had been cut back to 10,000 by the Labour government. Stephen Williams MP said, "It is clear that thousands of young people will lose out on a university place this summer. Clearing, for many years a feature of university applications, will probably not occur this year."
