Stephen Williams MP Welcomes New School For Ashley Down

Stephen Williams MP this morning welcomed the news that the new Liberal Democrat administration on Bristol City Council has dropped Labour's controversial plan to expand Sefton Park school and revert to the previous plans for a new primary school on the old Brunel College site.
"I've been inundated over the last few weeks with correspondence from local parents who are still waiting for a school place for their children. The lack of school places has been a big problem ever since I was elected, " commented Stephen Williams MP
The Liberal Democrats gave the go-ahead for a 210 place primary school on the college site, known locally as the Brunel field, when they were last in charge of Bristol City Council back in 2007. But Labour cancelled the plan in January 2008, proposing instead to expand Sefton Park infant and junior schools.
"Had Labour not cancelled the proposed school in the first place it could have been open by now. While it is clear that the city still requires more primary schools to cope with the demand for places Labour's failure to plan for the future has made the present problems worse, " Stephen added.
"There is clearly a lot of opposition to expanding Sefton Park school, both from the staff and parents. Labour were not prepared to listen to their concerns, instead opting to continue with the dogma that 'big schools are better schools'.
"I'm satisfied that the new Lib Dem administration has dealt with this issue swiftly and acted in the best interest of the families concerned."
