Marks & Spencer's Habourside Store Considered for Closure.

January 7, 2009 12:00 AM

Stephen Williams MP today received notification that the Harbourside store of Marks & Spencer is threatened with closure.

In a letter from the Head of Public affairs it was revealed that the store is no longer commercially viable and will be closed subject to consultation with employees.

Commenting on the proposed closure Stephen Williams MP said, "I am dismayed by this news and sad for the employees who are to lose their jobs. This is also a real blow to the regeneration of Harbourside. The M&S Simply Food store was a flag ship retail outlet for the area, which in time I'm sure would have traded successfully.

"I have expressed my surprise to M&S that they are pulling out of Harbourside before all the new flats, houses and offices under construction in the area are completed. It is a great pity that they have put short term harsh trading conditions ahead of a long term commitment to the centre of Bristol. I am sure that in time Harbourside will be a great success and M&S will regret their decision."

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
