Stephen Williams MP speaks out to keep major cycle path safe.

March 13, 2008 12:53 PM

Stephen Rides a BikeStephen Williams MP has spoken out in support of the 'Save the Railway Path' campaign (www.railwaypath.org), which is fighting proposals to run a guided bus route along the Bristol & Bath cycle Path from the city centre to Emerson's Green.

Mr Williams stated:

"There are far better ways to increase the use of public transport. Improved bus lanes and rail services would attract users without putting people off cycling and walking to school or work."

"Both of these are crucial at a time when we are trying to encourage both more environmentally friendly travel options and more active and healthy lifestyles, especially amongst children. More likely than not, this proposal will force people back into their cars."

The Bristol & Bath cycle Path is a highly successful scheme and Mr Williams questioned the safety of allowing buses into the sometimes narrow path which is used by cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Along with these public safety concerns, Stephen Williams commented on the negative effect that these proposals will have on the number of people who travel to work by bike, fearing that the added danger of buses travelling along the busy cycle path will dissuade them from cycling.

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
