Help Save the Old Vic!

February 12, 2008 3:40 PM

Stephen Williams outside the Bristol Old VicStephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, has welcomed the Arts Council's decision to fund the future of the Bristol Old Vic theatre. "I am delighted that the theatre's future is now secure. This comes after much lobbying and a huge demonstration of good will by the people of Bristol."

The Arts Council has decided to confirm its award of £2million towards the refurbishment of the Theatre Royal auditorium and other facilities. It will also give just short of £600,000 as revenue funding for the artistic programme for the next financial year starting 1st April 2008.

Stephen Williams has been in talks with the theatre's management going right back to 2005. The Theatre Royal auditorium needs a major revamp to make it into a comfortable venue in which to watch plays. An appeal for fund has been launched, with an estimated £9million needed. As well as the Arts Council's £2m the City Council has pledged £1m. Trusts and wealthy donors have also contributed but there is still some way to go. Stephen Williams said, "I will be making a donation and I urge everyone who wants to see our theatre revamped to make a contribution too. Every bit helps, whatever you can afford!"

The theatre also needs an annual subsidy in order to stage productions. A new board, headed by Watershed Director Dick Penny, will be recruiting the staff needed to start producing plays again. Stephen commented, "I have known Dick for many years and I have faith that he will gather around him a great team. It is vital that the productions put on the stage appeal to a range of tastes and reflect the city's cultural diversity."
