Stephen Williams MP Celebrates Victory For The Eastville Club

November 26, 2007 2:19 PM

ikeaStephen Williams MP has welcomed news that plans to evict Eastville Club from their premises, in the car park of furniture store Ikea, have been abandoned.

A month ago, Ikea advised the popular local club that it would not renew the lease for the building, so it could be replaced with extra parking spaces.

However, following talks between the Eastville Club, Ikea, and the City Council's planning officers, the retail giant has agreed to allow the club to remain at the site on a rolling lease.

In a letter to Ikea, Stephen Williams MP wrote:

"I am disappointed to hear that you wish to take possession of the premises… I would wish to make clear that, should you continue with your plan to evict the Club, I would object to any application of planning permission, making the premises effectively useless to you."

On hearing the news that Ikea had backed down, Stephen Williams MP commented:

"I am delighted with the news that all parties have come to an agreement to ensure the long-term future for the club. It is excellent to see that the local community has been able to stand up to such a big corporation."

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
