Bristol Tops League For Most Improved Unitary Authorities

November 26, 2007 12:12 PM

recyclingFigures released today show that Bristol is the most improved unitary authority for waste reduction.

The council's Liberal Democrat-designed strategy for waste management has resulted in a 21% drop in the waste disposed over the last year, which puts the city at the top of the league table for waste reduction.

Stephen Williams MP commented:

"This is excellent news. I would like to thank the people of Bristol for all their outstanding efforts over the last year. They have every reason to be proud of themselves."

"We all want Bristol to be a green and sustainable city. Plans implemented by the Liberal Democrats have more than tripled recycling from 12% to 40%."

"The Tory supported Labour administration strongly opposed our recycling strategy, but these new figures show the enormous improvements that have been made. "

"It has to be pointed out that the city's recycling percentage would be rising at an even higher rate by now if Labour had expanded the recycling network, progressed plans for rebates for low waste produces and not undermined council officers at every juncture. Hopefully they will now take the opportunity to build on Lib Dem proposals and improve our waste management even further."
