Stephen Williams has today written to the Transport for Greater Bristol Alliance, congratulating them on securing the support of Bristol City Council for the creation of a Strategic Transport Authority for Greater Bristol. The motion, which was passed unanimously by the Council yesterday (Tuesday) evening, welcomed the powers which will be given to local authorities in the draft Local Transport Bill, to be considered by Parliament later in the year.
In the letter, Stephen Williams wrote:
"By far one of the most common complaints I receive from constituents relates to the prices and reliability of bus and rail in and around Bristol. It is a cause of much frustration that my reply is often that the Council has no power over such things, and I am sure that the prospect of having a Transport Authority which could make a difference in those areas would be welcomed by the vast majority of Bristol residents. I will be supporting in Parliament the legislation that is needed in order to give councils such as Bristol these additional powers."
Stephen Williams also reaffirmed his support for the Alliance's Transport for Bristol Manifesto, which outlines a series of proposals to solve Bristol's chronic transport problems.
