Stephen Williams MP welcomes Smoke Free Bristol

July 3, 2007 11:36 AM

smoking banAfter many years of campaigning Stephen Williams MP is delighted to finally see a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places come into effect. The ban covers all enclosed public areas including bars, restaurants and offices.

The smoking ban has been a longstanding campaign issue for Stephen. Even before being elected MP for Bristol West, he consistently declared his support for a smoking ban in all public places.

Stephen Williams MP commented, "I am very pleased that a comprehensive ban on smoking in public places has finally come into force. The many weeks that I worked on the legislation back in 2005 and 2006 were certainly well spent. The Royal College of Nursing, the British Medical Association and the Chief Medical Officer have all supported this action, recognising the immense public health benefits that will come as a result. In Bristol we can tackle the terrible health inequalities that exist between different parts of the city.

"The benefits will not be limited to public health. A Smoke Free Bristol will help make the city's many public places a cleaner and more enjoyable social environment."

Stephen Williams was Liberal Democrat Shadow Public Health Minister from 2005 to 2006 and spoke for the party on the Health Bill that banned smoking in public places. He was one of only three MPs given an award for his work by Cancer Research UK.

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
