Are Labour faking photos in Bristol?

The photograph published by Labour

The photograph as published by the local Labour party, apparently showing the 2003 march against the Iraq war...

Stephen Williams, Lib Dem MP for Bristol West, has called on Labour's local election candidate in Lawrence Hill ward to explain why he appears in an allegedly doctored photograph in a recent election leaflet.

Busharat Ali's campaign published a Labour leaflet in which there appeared a photograph, apparently showing him at "the National March in London against the Iraq war", in February 2003. He complained in the leaflet of Lib Dem "Lies and slurs" about Labour's illegal war in Iraq. Yet, everyone knows that Liberal Democrat MPs voted against the war, and Stephen Williams took part in an anti-war march along with millions of other people around the country.

The photograph published by Labour is identical to one showing a different march in August 2006, at the same time as the Israeli military action against Lebanon. The only difference is that the Labour candidate does not appear in the original.

Commenting, Stephen Williams said:

"It seems clear that Busharat has something to hide. Otherwise, why would he feel the need to fake a photo of himself marching against the war? It is disappointing that the local Labour party feels the need out of desperation to resort to lies to cover up the biggest foreign policy disaster in the last 50 years."

Sue O'Donnell, Lib Dem councillor for Lawrence Hill, added:

...and the original, showing a march in 2006 protesting about Israeli military action in Lebanon, without the Labour candidate.

"All political parties have a responsibility to be honest and open with voters. Voters' impressions of politicians already tend to be negative, without candidates apparently faking photographs."

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
