Stephen Williams, Lib Dem MP for Bristol West, has spoken out in support of Alphonse Touna, and the 'Keep Alphonse Drumming' campaign. Alphonse is a musician and teacher from Cameroon facing deportation after the Home Office refused to renew his work permit, despite having done so repeatedly over the past five years.
Alphonse, who lives in St Werburghs, is well known for his work in the community. He regularly visits local schools and youth groups, teaching young people about African music and culture. He has also played an active role in the Abolition 200 events celebrating the abolition of the slave trade.
Stephen Williams said:
"I have repeatedly written to the Immigration Minister to highlight Alphonse's good work in the community, but despite this, he is unwilling to reconsider the refusal to renew Alphonse's work permit. If he is deported, it will be a great loss to Bristol."
Stephen Williams' comments come after a rally on Tuesday evening on College Green in support of Alphonse. The rally, attended by more than one hundred people, including local councillors Sue O'Donnell, Shirley Marshall and Jon Rogers, raised Alphonse's profile and provided passers-by with an opportunity to sign a petition in support of the campaign.
