Trident Vote is a Weapon of Mass Distraction - Williams

March 13, 2007 3:04 PM

Ahead of tomorrow's [Wednesday] controversial Parliamentary vote on the UK's nuclear weapons, Local Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams has spoken out against the timing of Labour's plan to renew the system.

The UK's nuclear missile system, Trident, is expected to come to the end of its working life in the next 20 years. After a short 3-month consultation period, the government has proposed spending £20 billion on replacing the submarines that carry the UK's nuclear warheads.

A recent Parliamentary committee has stated that any decision on Trident could be delayed until after the next election. Bristol West MP Stephen Williams not only believes that the UK should abolish its nuclear system, but also questions the government's urgency in making the decision at this time.

Speaking on Trident, Stephen Williams said:

"The rush by Labour to come to a decision on Trident is unjustified and shameful."

"They are trying to bounce MPs into voting to replace the system following an unsatisfactory period of consultation on this important issue"

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
