Stephen Boxing Visit

Stephen Williams MP and Cllr. Jon Rogers meet Flavious McCarthy and other members of the Empire Amateur Boxing Club

Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, Stephen Williams, and Lib Dem Councillor for Ashley, Jon Rogers, have paid a visit to the Empire Amateur Boxing Club to show their support for the project. The club was developed as a way of helping young people channel their energy into positive activities. The session explored the social and economical problems within the local area and explained how the club is working to improve teenagers' engagement within the community.

Martin Bisp, club secretary and organiser for amateur boxing said:

"We're trying to encourage young people off the streets, and this club is really making a difference, introducing discipline into their lives and raising self-esteem."

"Jon Rogers has been very helpful and supportive of this club, helping us to win grants from the Council to start up free, non-contact, after-school lessons for kids."

On top of the small joining fee, which includes a basic kit and members insurance, the low cost of £3 per week keeps clients coming back. The club has also been working with "Safer Bristol" to organise yoga and dance classes to include more of the local community within such projects.

Chris Sanigar, club owner said:

"Boxing requires dedication and commitment, it encourages them to keep fit, eat healthily."

After attending the session, Stephen Williams MP said:

"I think this club is an excellent example of how communities can come together and get involved in their local projects. Hopefully, with the introduction of future programmes, such as this one, we can see higher numbers of people engaging in a variety of sporting activities."
