Stephen Williams, Lib Dem MP for Bristol West, has called on the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust to publish their justification for increasing their bridge tolls by 66%. The tolls are to rise from 30p to 50p only three years since they were last increased from 20p.
Stephen Williams said "We are now having to go through the rigmarole of a public inquiry because the trust did not set out their intentions and the reasons behind them a year ago. The problem is that the trust is not accountable to anybody and is not obliged to take the views of its users into account. Everyone recognises that the bridge has to raise enough to pay for maintenance, but it is difficult to see how this could justify such a hefty increase."
