Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, has attacked the government over the millions of pounds wasted on its plans to merge all of the South West's current police forces into one super force - stretching from Gloucester to Cornwall. Plans which Labour this week sensationally dropped in the face of fierce opposition.
Stephen said "Nobody except Charles Clarke ever wanted these mergers, yet the Labour government ploughed on regardless, wasting millions of pounds of tax payers money in the process. People in Bristol are concerned about local crime issues such as anti-social behaviour, vandalism and whether they feel safe to go out at night. Creating a mega-police force would have done nothing to tackle these issues. We need more local police officers, rather than money wasting reorganisations."
"Unfortunately, it does not look like they have learnt their lesson, since they are now about to waste billions more on a completely ineffective ID cards scheme," he added.
