Stephen Williams MP promises the earth for World Environment Day

Stephen Williams MP for Bristol West, has promised to do his bit for World Environment Day this year by:
• putting a water saving device in the toilet
• turning the tap off when he brushes his teeth
• using the shower more often instead of having a bath
• switching to a renewable energy supplier
• switching to energy saving light bulbs
• not leaving lights on unnecessarily
• buying more locally sourced food
• not leaving electrical items in standby mode
• reusing plastic bags
• using more environmentally friendly cleaning products
The United Nations World Environment Day is celebrated every 5 June, since 1972. In the UK the campaign is led by the Environment Agency.
Stephen said "I support the Environment Agency's initiative to encourage people to do their bit to make the world a better place. We can all make small lifestyle changes that together can make a significant difference."
The Environment Agency is asking people to make ten small lifestyle changes that will make a huge difference to the environment, by logging onto www.environment-agency.gov.uk/wed/. For example, last year 25,000 people made promises, saving 181 swimming pools of water, 191 dustbin lorries of waste, and 3.37 million plastic bags, which if laid end to end would stretch 1,791 kilometres (1000 miles).
Businesses can also get involved - there are some specific promises for them - like start up a car sharing scheme - to get their staff to work more environmentally efficiently!
The Environment Agency has also joined forces with CSV (Community Service Volunteers) for Action Earth 2006. The campaign asks people to identify ways in which they can improve their local environment and then organise their own projects to meet that community need. By registering their project with CSV, community groups are eligible for a £50 grant to help with set-up and running costs.
