The government have admitted that they have no idea how much green house gas is produced by nuclear power, Stephen Williams MP has discovered. In an answer to a written question, Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks admitted that his department had "undertaken no assessment of the lifecycle carbon emissions of a nuclear fission plant."
Commenting on the discovery Stephen Williams MP said "This is grossly negligent of the government. They are actively considering building a whole new generation of nuclear power plants on the basis that they do not contribute towards global warming. However, they currently have no idea about how much carbon dioxide is produced by building the plant, mining the uranium or transporting tons of nuclear waste around the world for decommissioning."
"How can they possibly hope to come up with a sane and green energy policy if they don't do their homework." he added.
The admission comes the day before Stephen Williams supports a crucial cross party private members bill designed to encourage microgeneration - or the installation of small electricity generating appliances for the home.
