Stephen Williams MP calls on tax credit overpayment families to complain to ombudsman

November 9, 2005 5:25 PM

UK Money - notes and coinsStephen Williams MP, has called on anyone who has had a tax credit overpayment arising from official error to contact him so he can take the complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. In Bristol West, there are likely to be around 2,500 families who have had a tax credit overpayment since 2003.

Stephen Williams MP said, "Over the last few weeks, it has become quite clear that Government Ministers are behaving in a grossly complacent way over the recovery of tax credit overpayments. They are recklessly ignoring the clear statement by the Parliamentary Ombudsman that automatic recovery of tax credit overpayments is 'systemic maladministration'. The time has come for everyone who has had an overpayment to put pressure on the Government to act fairly and responsibly. If you have had an overpayment contact my office and we will look to refer your complaint to the Ombudsman. Because of the Ombudsman's statement, it is likely that she will uphold a complaint of maladministration in each and every case, purely on the grounds that the tax credit was recovered automatically."

If you live in Bristol West you can contact Stephen at PO Box 2500, Bristol, BS6 9AH or on 0117 942 34 94 or at stephenwilliamsmp@parliament.uk .

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
