Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, has joined a campaign in parliament to scrap charges on people withdrawing cash from machines. There has been a recent and dramatic rise in the number of machines that force customers to pay up to £2 to withdraw just £10 of their own money. The charges now cost British consumers an estimated £125 million a year. The Bristol Evening Post has had a long running campaign on this issue.
Stephen Williams said "Banks have cut their costs dramatically over the last few years by closing branches and installing cash machines instead. They now have the gall to allow other companies to charge people for withdrawing their own money, while washing their hands of the matter.
"This is an issue which disproportionately penalises those on low incomes. Furthermore in certain situations, for example if a lone female needs cash for a late night cab home, the charges could potentially be very dangerous."
