Cllr Jon Rogers
Young people in Bristol have picked a winner of the "I'm a Councillor - Get Me Out Of Here!" event.
Five city councillors braved the questions put to them by Bristol students over a two-week period on a specially created website www.bigvote.org.uk. Lib Dem Councillor Jon Rogers has taken the title of "Youth Champion" after winning the most online votes.
On finding out the result he said: "It's been a real privilege working with so many young, lively people. We must try and involve young people in the running of the city and I'll certainly do my part! It's been great to work with cross-party councillors who all contributed so positively."
Cllr Rogers and four fellow participants answered young people's questions and took part in live chats.
The event was a fun internet-based event that gave councillors a great opportunity to connect with young people. Councillors also had the opportunity to visit participating schools such as St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School and Clifton High School to take part in classroom activities.
It was part of Local Democracy Week, a national initiative run by the Local Government Association, which ran from 17- 23 October with the aim of promoting involvement in local politics/democracy to young people under 26 years of age.
Other councillors visiting schools during the week included Lib Dem Council Leader Barbara Janke who went to Fairfield High School.
Other Local Democracy Week activities in Bristol include a democracy awareness workshop which took place earlier today as a way of encouraging more people, but particularly women from Black and Minority Ethnic communities, to get involved with local democracy.
