Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, is backing calls to scrap the new 24 hour drinking rules due to come in to force on 24th November. Bristol City Council is having to spend thousands of pounds on processing hundreds of last minute applications by pubs and clubs not wanting to lose their current rights.
Stephen Williams said "This new law is half baked and under funded. There is not enough control available for local people to decide where they want late licensed premises and where they don't. I have received many complaints from residents, who were not aware that an application for a nearby pub had been put in until it was too late. If they don't receive any formal objections, Councillors then have very little choice but to approve the new licence. We must give local people the power to shape their own communities."
