Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, has condemned the Department for Work and Pensions in light of a new report which reveals they are wasting £100 per taxpayer every year. The report, published by the Public Accounts Committee (on which Stephen Williams sits) revealed that £3 billion is wasted by the DWP either through fraud or government mistakes.
Stephen Williams said "The Labour Party is always making promises about cutting fraud and tackling errors, and yet everything they do just makes the pensions and benefits system more and more complicated. Until the system is streamlined, such waste is inevitable.
"This is the 15th year in a row that the accounts of the DWP have not been signed off. It is a damning indictment of the huge centralised government favoured by a succession of Labour and Conservative administrations.
"That £100 per person amounts to almost £20 million across Bristol. Just think what good could be done with that money," he added.
