Stephen Williams MP backs microgeneration to beat global warming

Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, is calling on all of Bristol's MPs and Bristol City Councillors to pledge their support for microgeneration. Microgeneration is the generation of electricity by people in their own homes or communities using small and affordable appliances, like solar panels. Many argue that it provides our best chance for beating global warming.
Stephen Williams said "If every boiler that needed replacing over the next 15 years, was replaced by one that generated electricity from waste heat, we could scrap all of our nuclear power stations without any increase in greenhouse gases. This is a fabulous opportunity to make a real difference in the battle to beat global warming."
"The bill we will be debating in Parliament has cross party support, but not from the government. This just shows how they are all talk and no action when it comes to the environment. I call on all of the Bristol MPs to make sure that this bill gets through to the next stage," he added.
Bristol City Council will debate the subject at their full council meeting tonight ahead of Parliament, who debate it on 11th November. If passed, the Bill will require the government to come up with a strategy for encouraging the growth of microgeneration and report back to parliament annually on progress. Microgeneration includes the use of solar panels to generate electricity or heat water, the erection of small wind turbines or the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) boilers which use excess heat from water heating to generate up to 1kW of electricity.
