Stephen Williams MP believes that preventative health care is the best way to improve the nation's health.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Charles Kennedy MP, has announced that the new MP for Bristol West, Stephen Williams is to become a Lib Dem health spokesman.
Stephen will work under Northavon MP Steve Webb who has been made Shadow Secretary of State for Health. Another MP from the South West, Julia Goldsworthy of Falmouth and Cambourne, will make up the rest of the health team. In addition to this new role, Stephen Williams has also been made a member of two select committees that scrutinise all new government legislation. He will serve on both the Education and Skills select committee and the Public Accounts committee.
While it will be a heavy workload for the new MP, Stephen Williams relishes the opportunity. He said "It will give me the chance to highlight the party's policies on preventative health care, which has been one of my long term political interests. In addition I would want to promote the treatment of certain cancers and I look forward to a lively debate with the government over their inadequate plans to ban smoking in public places."
Charles Kennedy MP said "I am delighted to announce these new and updated parliamentary appointments including the chairmanships of important Select Committees. This is the largest Liberal Democrat presence in the House of Commons since 1923 and with these new appointments we will be able to play an even greater role in challenging and scrutinising the government over the course of this Parliament."
