Lib Dem support for smoking ban

January 24, 2005 12:00 AM

Support has been given for pub chain JD Weatherspoon's decision to ban smoking in its Bristol pubs. Weatherspoons have announced that they will ban smoking nationwide in all 650 of their pubs in 2006. But they will run 60 pilot bans from May this year, including their Bristol outlets.

Stephen Williams, Prospective Lib Dem MP for Bristol West has taken an interest in preventative health measures for many years. He has stated his support for a ban on smoking in enclosed public places on many occasions. "I am delighted that Weatherspoons are taking this step. They are being much more bold than the government who are talking about just a partial ban from 2008. I've written to the company to congratulate them and look forward to enjoying a smoke free visit to my local pub The Magic Box on Stokes Croft."

The Liberal Democrats have a policy of banning smoking in enclosed public places. Stephen Williams has pledged on several occasions to argue for an early ban if he becomes the next MP for Bristol West.

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
