Stephen Williams has campaigned for the new school since 1998
The announcement that the Deputy Prime Minister has given the go ahead for the new secondary school in Redland has been given a warm welcome by the area's would be MP. Stephen Williams, Prospective Lib Dem MP for Bristol West, praised John Prescott's decision that a planning enquiry was not needed before the school could be built.
"This decision is most welcome. It will be a huge relief for thousands of local parents. I and my Liberal Democrat councillor colleagues have campaigned for a new school for over six years and we are pleased that the final hurdle has now been cleared."
At the city council planning committee meeting on 24th November the school plans were approved by 9 votes to 2. The five Labour and four Liberal Democrat councillors voted in favour while the two Conservatives refused to support the new school. As the planning approval meant a change in the planning designation of the Redland Court playing fields the decision had to be ratified by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. John Prescott had the option of setting up a planning inquiry which could have taken months to resolve. His decision to give immediate approval means that building work can start next year.
