Simon Cook: First ever Lib Dem Lord Mayor of Bristol
Cllr Simon Cook (Clifton East) is to become Bristol's first ever Liberal Democrat Lord Mayor later this year.
Cllr Cook was first elected to Bristol City Council in 1999 and has served as the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on environment, transport and leisure. He has been accepted by all three parties to be the first Liberal Democrat holder of the post and will take over from the current Labour Lord Mayor on 11th May.
Cllr Cook said: "Although we didn't win the European Capital of Culture bid, we did come very close and I think it gave us an enormous amount of confidence. I'm keen to try to keep that 'buzz' in the city going.
"Culture is something that affects us all - the way we live and the way we work and play. My year will be devoted to making sure that we become a capital of culture, as well as a city where community, economy and sustainability work hand in hand to create the kind of society that we want."
This landmark is a sure sign of the growing political strength and influence that the Lib Dems have in Bristol. The Council is currently hung, with a three-party administration led by Lib Dem Cllr Barbara Janke (Clifton). Labour lost overall control in Bristol in May 2003 after twenty years.
