Brent result points to Lib Dem victory in Bristol West

September 19, 2003 12:00 AM

The Liberal Democrats look set to romp home at the next general election in Bristol West, based on the result in the Brent East by-election. Lib Dem candidate Sarah Teather snatched the inner London seat with a huge 29% swing in support away from Labour.

Stephen Williams, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate in Bristol West explains, "In order to win Bristol West next time we need a swing from Labour of just 4%. Sarah Teather's win in Brent was on the back of a swing seven times greater. I and a team of activists from Bristol West were delighted to help Sarah gain her historic victory. Her win brings our victory in Bristol West much closer."

The Conservatives slipped to third place in Brent and there was a 15% swing away from them to the Lib Dems. Stephen Williams comments, "The tide has now turned against Tony Blair but it has remained out as far as the Tories are concerned. I pushed the Tories into third place in Bristol West at the last general election. Their local support has weakened further since then."

Bristol West is the Liberal Democrats' third most winnable seat from Labour. If the Brent swings were repeated then Stephen Williams would win with a majority of over 15,000. The Lib Dems topped the poll at both the 2002 and 2003 City Council elections in Bristol West.

The Brent East result comes on the back of months of positive poll ratings for the Liberal Democrats. The latest Guardian/ICM poll has national Lib Dem support at 28%, only two points behind the Conservatives and seven points behind Labour!

If you are a resident of the Bristol West constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
