Labour Leadership Failure Exposed

March 20, 2002 12:00 AM

Councillor Barry DoddLiberal Democrat councillors have welcomed a very serious Government report into the state of corporate governance in Bristol today. The Labour Council is characterised as having "weak leadership", "cumbersome decision making" and "no clear direction". The citizens of Bristol are described as not getting the quality of civic leadership they deserve and of having to pay for a weak link between money spent and results.

Cllr Barry Dodd, Shadow Executive Member for finance and central services says, "This report is absolutely damning, but the pity is that what it reveals has been known to Bristolians for years. Here in black and white, from a prestigious Government body is reported that the local Labour Party is failing dismally to give this City the quality of leadership it deserves and needs.

"The current Labour group is clearly incapable of tackling these problems. The City desperately needs a forward-thinking leadership that is focused on improvement. Labour's weak leadership is a dead hand on the City's progress."

"Their failure to recognise and admit to these weaknesses by dismissing the elements of the report that criticise their leadership, once again shows just how out of touch the Labour Cabinet has become. Clearly it is time for a change at Bristol City Council and the only way we are going to achieve this is by people using their vote on May 2nd."

The Corporate Governance report has been written following a vigorous inspection of the Council by top civil servants, local government officers and government inspectors led by the Audit Commission.

In the report key weaknesses in leadership, decision making and performance are highlighted. The Audit Commission have said that "Local people are not getting the quality civic leadership that they deserve... At the moment there is no clear direction, decision-making is cumbersome and leadership is weak."

This report has come after a series of poor reports into they way Bristol City Council is run.
