Clean up Bristol campaign launched

Cllr Rosalie Brown and fellow Liberal Democrats are urging the Council to back a new campaign to 'clean up Bristol' with Lib Dem Councillors calling for an additional £200,000 to be spent on street cleaning, graffiti and fly poster removal at next Tuesday's Full Council meeting.
Cllr Rosalie Brown (Henleaze Ward) says: "Neighbourhoods across the city, as well as our city centre, are being ruined by litter, fly tipping, graffiti and fly posting. It is time that the Council took responsibility and tackled this growing problem. 'Clean up Bristol' is our new campaign to eradicate these problems from our streets."
"Fly posting in the city centre and main shopping areas is now virtually out of control and the Council must attack this in three ways. Clean up the mess, prosecute the offenders and finally provide legal places where people can display their promotional notices."
"Bristol people are telling us that they are shocked at the state of the City and that the Council has allowed it to become filthy and scruffy. Visitors to Bristol have put litter and graffiti as one of the four worst things about Bristol."
Liberal Democrats have proposed spending an extra £200,000 to tackle dirty streets, graffiti and fly posting. They want to see Council hit squads sent out to tackle problems instantly. In addition they are calling for the Council to prosecute fly posters and encourage private companies to remove graffiti from their buildings.
The proposal forms part of the Liberal Democrat budget amendment at next Tuesday's (5th March 2002) Council Meeting to be held at the Council House at 2pm.
